Program Models and Activities:

At Oyster Tribe Aboriginal Corporation, we are committed to supporting families and strengthening communities through practical, culturally grounded advocacy and advice. Our Wiradjuri Language & Culture Workshops are a cornerstone initiative, delivered in partnership with the Oyster Care Foundation and the Aboriginal Legal Service, and funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

Wiradjuri Language & Culture Workshops

Core Objective:

Empower young people and the wider community to connect with Wiradjuri Elders, learn the Wiradjuri language, and strengthen cultural identity through intergenerational storytelling, language preservation, and community celebration.

Program Focus Area:

  • Elder Interviews & Oral Histories
    Recording and preserving Elders’ stories, songs, and cultural knowledge, ensuring these voices are honored and accessible for future generations.
  • Community Storytelling Events
    Bringing families and community members together to share food, listen to stories, and celebrate Wiradjuri culture in a welcoming, inclusive environment.
  • Language Revitalisation & Learning
    Facilitating hands-on workshops and activities to teach the Wiradjuri language, encourage everyday use, and inspire the next generation of language keepers.
  • Legacy Resource Creation
    Building a community archive of language and cultural resources, supporting ongoing learning and ensuring the Wiradjuri language remains strong and vibrant.
  • Ongoing Engagement & Support
    Providing opportunities for continued involvement, mentorship, and cultural connection beyond the workshops, fostering a resilient and proud Wiradjuri community.

Objectives and Outcomes:

The Wiradjuri Language & Culture Workshops are designed to empower young people and community members to connect deeply with Wiradjuri Elders, preserve language heritage, and strengthen cultural identity. Our objective is to create lasting intergenerational bonds, celebrate community storytelling, and ensure the Wiradjuri language thrives for future generations.
By delivering immersive workshops and ongoing engagement, we aim to achieve the following outcomes:
Deepen understanding and appreciation of Wiradjuri language and culture
Enable participants to learn directly from Elders, gaining authentic insights into Wiradjuri stories, traditions, and language use, while fostering pride in cultural identity.
 
Preserve and share Elders’ knowledge for future generations
Record and archive oral histories, songs, and cultural teachings, building a valuable resource that safeguards community wisdom and ensures its accessibility for years to come.

Empower community members as language keepers and advocates
Equip youth and families with the skills and confidence to use, teach, and celebrate the Wiradjuri language in everyday life, supporting revitalization efforts across the region.

Strengthen community connection and intergenerational relationships
Facilitate storytelling events and shared cultural experiences that bring together families, Elders, and young people, reinforcing community bonds and a sense of belonging.

Our workshops are open to all young people, families, and community members interested in learning the Wiradjuri language, connecting with Elders, and celebrating Wiradjuri culture. No prior knowledge or experience is required—everyone is welcome.
